God, we bring our gift of music, touch our lips and fire our heart.
Teach our minds and train our senses, fit us for this sacred art.

The Sanctuary Choir

the Holy Trinity Sanctuary Choir in Rome, spring 2006

The Sanctuary Choir is preparing for our Annual Memorial Concert. We are well into our busy fall and winter season. Our concert is quickly approaching in November and we're preparing for the upcoming holiday season as well. We're also planning for our trip to Spain in March of 2012! If you are interested in joining us, we welcome you to rehearsals. We've got a great group but as with any organization of this type we're always looking for new blood, fresh spirits and dedicated souls. If you like to sing, if you've been told you have a good voice, if you feel this is a good way for you to contribute to the parish, we'd love to hear from you. We're looking for all voice parts (although men are always especially welcome). We don't require choir experience (although it's helpful). We don't even require that you be able to read music (although we hope you'll take this opportunity to learn). There's no audition for the sanctuary choir, just contact Jay at 214.526.5463 or jayt@htccd.org. He'll tell you about rehearsal times and places and see that you are welcomed into the group. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Sanctuary Choir of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas has been under the direction of J. C. Terpstra since January, 2004.  The thirty-five member all volunteer choir sings choral music from a variety of periods and styles and has worked continuously to spread God’s Word through their gift of music. They are the principal choir for the parish and are responsible for leading the congregation in song and providing special choral music for weekly mass and holy days.  In addition to the regular music liturgy for the mass, the Sanctuary Choir performs an annual Memorial Concert near the feast of All Soul’s Day. The choir, with soloists, and chamber orchestra has most recently performed Mozart’s Requiem Mass and Missa Solemnis in C minor, John Rutter’s Requiem, Gabriel Faure’s Requiem, Cherubini’s Requiem Mass in C minor, Morten Lauridsen’s Lux Aeterna, and Franz Schubert’s Mass in G.  The choir leads a Choral Rosary twice a year in October and May where the prayers of the Rosary are chanted by a cantor and the congregation. Between the decades, the choir sings a Marian anthem or motet.  During the Christmas season we have added a tradition of Lessons and Carols where the story of Christ's birth is told through readings from scripture and traditional hymns. This is usually followed by an informal celebration in Trinity Hall with more Christmas songs and fun for the kids. The choir finishes our year in the spring  with an annual “Pops Concert”; a Broadway-style musical production in a dinner theater setting for parish members and the community...always a big hit!  This concert gives us a chance to showcase the individual talents of choir members and strengthen ties in our church community.

In the spring of 2006, the choir went on tour to Italy where we sang formal concerts at St. Ignatius Church in Rome and at St. Mark’s Church in Florence as well as serving as the principle choir during mass at St. Peter’s Basilica and at the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi. In March 2012, we will be traveling to Spain where we plan to sing in Seville and Granada. To finance our travels, we host several fundraisers during the year including a booth at the school Halloween festival and Fish Fry dinners complete with cabaret entertainment during Lent.

The choir welcomes singers of all levels who are willing to commit their time and energy to this ministry. We have a varied membership with several choristers who have been in the choir for thirty years and two members who just joined in 2009 who are now on the choir council. We range in age from twenties to seventies and come from Carrollton, Oak Cliff, and the Park Cities as well as our local neighborhood, Oak Lawn.
